CLP Labelling Checklist for Candle Makers

Use this checklist before every production run. Tick each item. If anything fails, do not ship the batch until it's corrected.

This checklist covers both GB CLP (enforced by HSE) and EU CLP (enforced by ECHA / national authorities).

Product Identifier

The label clearly states the product name and a brief description (e.g., "Lavender Soy Candle — 200g").

Tip: The name must match what the consumer sees on the packaging. No ambiguity.

Supplier Name, Address & Phone

Your full business name, UK/EU postal address, and telephone number are present. An email alone is not sufficient.

Tip: Trading names (e.g., "Candles by Jane") must be accompanied by the legal entity name.

Hazard Pictogram(s)

Correct GHS pictograms displayed as red-bordered diamonds, minimum 10×10mm. For candles, typically GHS07 (⚠️ Exclamation mark) and/or GHS09 (🌳 Environment).

Tip: Pictograms must be black symbols on white background with red border. No emojis, no custom designs.

Signal Word

"Warning" or "Danger" is present, correctly selected based on the most severe hazard category. Most candles carry "Warning".

Tip: If your calculation shows no hazard classification at all, no signal word is needed — but this is rare for scented products.

Hazard Statements (H-Statements)

All applicable H-statements are listed verbatim from the regulation. Common ones: H317, H410, EUH208.

Tip: Do not paraphrase. Use the exact wording from Annex III of CLP Regulation.

Precautionary Statements (P-Statements)

All applicable P-statements are included. Typically 4–6 P-statements covering prevention, response, storage, and disposal.

Tip: Maximum 6 P-statements per label unless more are strictly necessary. Combine where the regulation allows (e.g., P302+P352).

EUH208 — Named Allergens

If a fragrance component is classified as a skin/respiratory sensitiser and is present above its special-labelling threshold in the final product — ≥0.1% for Cat. 1/1B, ≥0.01% for Cat. 1A (or one-tenth of any specific concentration limit) — name it: "Contains [chemical name]. May produce an allergic reaction." At ≥1.0% (Cat. 1/1B) the candle is classified H317 instead.

Tip: This is a CLP classification rule, not the cosmetics 26/81 fragrance list — there is no rinse-off/leave-on split for candles.

Net Weight / Nominal Quantity

The net weight (e.g., "200g ℮") is clearly stated in metric units.

Tip: The ℮ mark (estimated sign) is required for prepackaged products sold by weight in the EU. UK uses it voluntarily.

Batch Number

A traceable batch identifier links the product to its production run and CLP classification record.

Tip: Format is your choice (date-based, sequential, etc.) but must allow full traceability back to the SDS data used.

BS EN 15494 Fire Safety Label

A separate fire safety pictogram and safety instructions are present: burn within sight, keep away from draughts, don't burn more than 4 hours, keep away from children.

Tip: This is in addition to the CLP label, not a replacement. Both are legally required for candles sold in the UK and EU.

How to Use This Checklist

  1. Print it — keep a copy at your workstation
  2. Before each batch — verify the label against all 10 items
  3. When you change formula — re-run the CLP calculation and update the label
  4. When regulations change — check if cut-off values or required statements have been updated
